Introducing the Abili Ecosystem

5 million

Over 5 million individuals cannot use a keyboard, mouse or a touchscreen with their hands due to a hand disability. 5 MILLION. That’s more than the entire state of Louisiana! A variety of conditions can be the reason:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Repetitive strain injury
  • Quadriplegia
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Paralysis
  • Stroke
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Complications from surgery
  • Neurofibromatosis
  • Multiple sclerosis [MS]
  • Chiari malformation
  • Syringomyelia
  • Post-polio syndrome
  • Spinal muscular atrophy
  • Friedreich’s ataxia
  • Transverse myelitis
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Spina bifida

  • just to list a few!

Obviously, this can severely limit access to computers and smartphones. Digital access is now a non-negotiable basic necessity for all, especially as workplaces and schools have gone remote in recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Not to mention simple day-to-day usage like texting a friend, browsing social media, playing video games or just watching netflix!

Our mission at Abilitare is to empower those with a hand disability with the same level of productivity as everyone else, be it at work, school or home. Hand disability should not be a barrier to digital freedom. The Abili Mouse is our attempt to break this barrier.

    The Abili Head Mouse

Person with hand disability using hands free mouse or headmouse

The Abili Head Mouse moves the mouse cursor with head movements instead of hands. As shown in the video above, it makes the cursor follow your head. Simply put, look up to move the mouse cursor up, look down to move it down or look sideways to move it left or right on the screen.

The Abili Head Mouse has advanced motion sensors to track your head movements and send them over bluetooth to the computer. It needs to be worn on the head, either using a headband, a cap or a pair of headphones. It has a clip to hook on to a cap or headband. The box includes a velcro that can be used to stick the mouse to any over-the-ear or on-the-ear headphones. Just make sure the side labeled ‘Front’ faces forward and ‘Up’ faces upwards.

    How do I click?

Move cursor with Abili Mouse and click using Abili Toolbar or Switch

The Abili Head Mouse can move the mouse cursor. So far so good. But how to click? Abilitare offers two options for clicking, the Abili Adaptive Switch and Abili Dwell Toolbar. The Abili Adaptive Switch is a simple button that connects over bluetooth. Just press to click, similar to buttons on a regular mouse.

    Abili Adaptive Switch

If you currently use an adaptive switch or have some movement in arms or legs, the Abili Adaptive Switch may be right for you. It has a super low activation force to relieve stress on your muscles. It's like feather-touch!

You can tap the switch in a variety of ways, like with fists, feet or elbows depending on user specific abilities and preferences. It is connected wirelessly via bluetooth, so no hassles about connecting modems, adapters or managing messy wires. The switch can easily attach to surfaces like your wheelchair, table, chair, etc.

    Abili Dwell Toolbar

    Abili Toolbar

If you are unable to move your arms or legs or prefer not to, Abili Dwell Toolbar is a “dwell” activated toolbar. To click a button, simply hover or “dwell” over it for a fraction of a second. You can select the type of click or action you want to perform by dwelling on that option in the toolbar. Once selected, dwell again on the button you want to perform the action. It has common mouse tasks built into the toolbar, such as left click, right click, click and drag, scroll up and down.

You can position the toolbar on the left, top or right edge of the screen. To allow you to see what’s under the toolbar on screen, it can be made collapsible by unpinning it. It can even be made transparent. What’s more, it’s completely free!
